On Earth today, the reflection effect dominates—clouds overall have a cooling effect. Short-term changes in climate are common as conditions oscillate (or change) from one state to another (Figure 17.29). The Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) is a NASA -sponsored satellite mission that is providing state-of-the-art measurements of incoming x-ray, ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and total solar radiation.

Over the years, techniques for measuring such ocean water properties have changed drastically in method and accuracy. Until now, scientists presumed that seafloor volcanoes exuded lava at a slow and steady pace, but Tolstoy thinks that not only do the volcanoes erupt in bursts, they follow remarkably consistent patterns that range anywhere from two weeks to 100,000 years.

The third part of each report deals with the mitigation of climate change, outlining the prospects and options for change, particularly in the energy sector, which accounts for 60% of emissions. M., Shindell, D., Toder, E., Williams, R. Whenever you use electricity, you help put greenhouse gases into the air. Alas, that happens less often than one might like, but there’s nothing that stops you from pretending your adversary said something dumb and then pouncing on the imaginary remark. Life on earth inhabits a layer no more than 9 km thick, extending from a bare few kilometers above sea level (airborne organisms and life on mountains) to a few kilometers below (deep ocean basin creatures and subterranean microbial communities).

Today, I would put more emphasis on aerosols' role in cooling rather than in warming, although the soot issue is challenging that revision (see Hansen and Nazarenko, 2004; Hansen et al., 2000; Hansen and Sato, 2000; Jacobson, 2002; Jacobson, 2004; Novakov et al., 2003; and Black Carbon Contributes To Droughts And Floods In China ). It is estimated that TESS will discover around 300 "super-Earth" alien planets, many of them in the habitable zone.

CO2 is the most important greenhouse gas that human activities affect. But what astonished them was the rapidity with which these changes occurred. Further advances in predictive capabilities will come with data from the new GPM satellite, which can measure falling rain, snow, and ice in light to heavy quantities and cover the entire globe every three hours. If, as conventional wisdom has it, global temperatures could rise by 3°C or more in response to a doubling of emissions, then the correct response would be the one to which most of the world pays lip service: rein in the warming and the greenhouse gases causing it.

What is the dewpoint when the dry-bulb temperature is 24C and the wet-bulb temperature is 15C? It concludes that climate change will have significant impacts including increased stress on water supplies and a widening threat of species extinction. The resolution – submitted each year over the past five years – stems from growing frustration that ExxonMobil has a problem with transparency, and that fracking is one key area where the company could choose to become more forthcoming.
