On the other hand, the results obtained in certain projects (in particular, Iran and Sudan) tend to show that instructors exercising the same activity and having the same socio-economic status as the participants obtain better results than professional teachers and instructors exercising other activities or having a different socio-economic status. Similarly, the results of the global evaluation make it possible to put forward the hypothesis according to which the effectiveness of functional literacy training depends on the participant-instructor ratio applied by the programme.
14 The information gathered during the execution of the EWLP make it possible to validate, in this respect, the following hypothesis: the effectiveness of functional literacy training depends on the possibility of introducing into the dimensions of the pedagogical situation improvements derived from acquired experience, new conditions and retro-information provided through practice. STEP 12. SELF-TRAINING From the educational point of view, self-training constitutes the final point of the functional method.
The functional literacy method is seen, by contrast, to be less a new type of literacy work than a training process in which the goals are inferred or borrowed from extrinsic objectives, from development operations or programmes which provide the framework for the action of the illiterate adults concerned, be they craftsmen, workers, or peasants. This process seeks to facilitate the acquisition of an integrated store of knowledge, skills and know-how leading to a genuine "recasting of the modes of being and functioning".
