Very large corporations have built their accounting systems from scratch by hiring systems analysts and computer programmers who design custom applications. Even when a small business buys Peachtree or QuickBooks, they sometimes hire a computer programmer to add to its features by writing custom computer routines. This option is very expensive and time consuming. This book assumes that you are not currently a candidate for this complex and costly aspect of computerized accounting. Page 8 Electronic Checkbooks Are Not Accounting Software There are some very popular record keeping programs in use by small businesses that are not accounting programs because they do not maintain full account ledgers and have no capacity for managing accounts receivable (customer accounts) or accounts payable (vendor accounts).
