Under ordinary conditions attending to the length of the entire figure should be the reasonable way to judge the length of the part. " A "duck-rabbit" can be seen as either one kind of animal or the other. Most of us, at least, cannot see both at once. Rather we experience "Gestalt switches," and shift back and forth from one to the other. 52 Just as we cannot perceive the duck and the rabbit simultaneously, it is claimed that we cannot regard a theory from two different perspectives at the same time.

But any such habit militates against our success in reading proof. I remember once typing a manuscript, and detecting an error only because the lines in the original and in the copy were of different lengths. I read the two lines several times, but could see nothing; only when I took the two sheets of paper, put one on top of the other, and then held them up to a light did the error stand forth! Reading for content and reading for accuracy are two different activities; trying to do both at the same time is inefficient because neither is done as well as it might be.

We can put a pair of identical figures side by side, or just look at one figure in different ways at different times. These psychological limitations merely reflect the way in which our visual equipment happens to be organized. Perhaps it would be too costly to be able to see a duck and a rabbit at the same time. In the natural environment in which our nervous systems evolved, an organism is either a duck or a rabbit. Of course those who have speculated about paradigm incommensurability have other reasons for believing in it.
