For many hunters this is perhaps the most frustrating and difficult place in the whitetail’s domain to hunt for trophy bucks. While Maine’s reputation for big-bodied bucks is well deserved, they are still as rare there as an honest politician. Success rates are in the single digits and it is not uncommon for many hunters to spend the entire month-long season without seeing a buck of any kind.

You must be able to walk for miles, all the while maintaining complete mental awareness. Often you will find yourself miles from camp or car when darkness falls, which means more walking, and you must be able to get up and do it again the next day, the one after that, and for as many days as it takes. You need complete comfort in the woods, without fear or even thoughts of getting lost, and when you finally shoot a buck, you may find yourself with a 250-pound deer and 6 miles of wilderness between you and the road.
