All volleyball players, whether or not they are specifically to become setters, need to master basic overhead passing and the application they will most likely use.  Just be sure you and your players understand the difference between overhead passing and setting. General Principles • Contact the ball above and as close as possible to the forehead (see Figure 4­1a). • Be compact and balanced (see Figure 4­1b). • Get to the point of contact before the ball arrives, and face the target (see Figure 4­1c).

You can use either a specific time block or a certain number of successful repetitions to measure performance.  Groups may operate from both service areas.  The winner exchanges places with the target.  The winner from each triad moves up, the second­place finisher stays in the same position, and the loser moves down.  The player with the most "wins" is the winner. " Some South American players even use their heads to set the ball on occasion.  They must be able to jump set, collapse set, back set, quick set, play set, short set, and bump set and use specialized postures and deceptive movements.

Similar to "swimming," the force is pulled away from the ball and consistent control is jeopardized.  To be successful, all players must develop consistent overhead passing skills.  Make sure that all players use overhead passing in game­like situations and clearly understand the functions of overhead passing.  Players must understand the varying heights and distances required for each function of a pass or set.  Go to the overhead pass drills in combination with forearm passing and attack.  An attack volley is an overhead pass and the third, terminating contact.
