These deformations cause several problems affecting the core performance such as reactivity changes and enhanced extraction force for the subassembly. To overcome these problems, gaps are ensured between the subassembly faces by providing contact buttons. The gap needs to be optimized from allowable bowing, dilation, and neutronic considerations.
